Harold Avella
MDHAROLD AVELLA, MD, FAAPMR.
Dr. Harold Avella trained at Long Island Jewish Medical Center where he completed a residency
in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He was Chief Resident during his last year. After
graduating he joined the LIJ Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department as an attending
physician taking care of patients with orthopedic and neurological diseases at the Regional
Center for Brain Injury and Rehabilitation in South Side Hospital in Bay Shore, NY. He was
also a physiatrist in the Neck and Back Pain Clinic at the Health Institute in South Side Hospital
where he cared for patients with a wide variety of disorders such as arthritis, sports injuries,
stroke, joint replacements and neck and back pain.
He has been working in private practice taking care of patients for more than 20 years. He
specializes in orthopedic rehabilitation, neck and back pain, joint pain, musculoskeletal
conditions, sports medicine and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Dr Avella’s training expertise
and interests include treatment of these conditions in addition to the use of trigger point
injections for muscle spasm, intra-articular injections with cortisone and Hyaluronic gel and
Electrodiagnostic testing (EMG/NCS).
Dr Avella is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a Fellow of the
American Academy of PMR. He is certified under the Workers Compensation Law and has vast
experience in the treatment of patients with workers compensation and no-fault injuries. He is an
assistant professor of PMR at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and has taught doctors in
training in PMR and has lectured to physicians in LIJ and Southside Hospital and to physical
therapy students in Nassau Community College and Touro College. In addition he has served as
medical advisor for MCC Travel Soccer Club and the Catholic Middle Schools Athletic
Association.
