ACL injuries occur when the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is harshly twisted in the wrong way. This twisting results in an injury or tear to this ligament of the knee joint. ACL injuries are common in athletes who participate in a wide range of sports. Including, but not limited to: tennis, basketball, football, soccer, gymnastics or downhill skiing. An ACL tear occurs when there is a sudden stop and rapid change of direction. Many sports increase the risk for twisting the knee, resulting in a torn ACL.

ACL injuries are often painful and debilitating. Those suffering from this type of injury commonly experience swelling, pain, and limited range of motion. It can also make it hard to walk or put pressure on the injured joint. Fortunately, our Northport physical therapy specialists can provide much needed treatment for  your ACL injury.

Prevention is the best medicine. “Research shows that 26% of non-contact ACL injuries could be prevented by specific exercise programs” (source Get PT1st).  Progressive Medical Fitness is dedicated to ACL injury treatment and recovery, and focuses on the prevention of future injuries. Physical therapists at our Northport office have an arsenal of ACL Risk Analysis Tests to assess your risk for future ACL injury. One screening assessment is a jump-landing test: the Landing Error Scoring System (LESS).

Our physical therapy team will design a targeted treatment strategy based on the results of your diagnostics and ACL Risk Analysis Tests. Your targeted treatment strategy will include the latest techniques to reduce pain and restore normal activity such as manual therapy, ice and heat therapy, ultrasound and/or a customized exercise regime.
