Help for Those Living with Fibromyalgia

Find Relief for Your Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Symptoms vary so widely, it can be difficult to know if you have been living with fibromyalgia.

Symptoms can be very mild, so that they are difficult to notice. From time to time, you may experience a little bit of pain. Perhaps you are sore from overexercising or you stubbed your toe. Often, you’re able to disregard it or take ibuprofen and go about your day.

Unfortunately, sometimes the pain is widespread and chronic and does not improve, despite your best efforts. This type of pain has a wide ranging effect on your life that prescription medication cannot alleviate.

If you experience widespread musculoskeletal pain along with fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues, you may be suffering from the disorder known as fibromyalgia.

If you identify with this set of symptoms, contact Progressive Medical Fitness today to request an appointment with our licensed Northport physical therapy team. We can help relieve the fibromyalgia symptoms you are experiencing.

Physical therapy and fibromyalgia relief

We provide effective treatment for both improving symptoms for the long-term and regaining optimal body function at Progressive Medial Fitness.

There is no single, foolproof treatment for fibromyalgia as it is not a disease but a collection of symptoms.

Our licensed Progressive Medical Fitness physical therapy team will conduct a thorough examination of your physical capabilities, as well as analyze your current symptoms and medical history, in order to design an individualized treatment plan that will address your specific needs.

Fibromyalgia symptoms are typically treated  with pain management medication or anti-depressants. However, medication is not able to alleviate the chronic nature of the condition or provide improved functioning when you are suffering from the distress of chronic pain.

Your individualized physical therapy treatment plan will typically begin with pain-relieving modalities to provide immediate relief for deep muscle pain. This may include many therapeutic techniques that are beneficial to your recovery such as, trigger point therapy, manual therapy, electrical stimulation and stretching exercises, among others.

After this, your treatments will shift toward active therapies to treat the long-term effects of fibromyalgia and reduce the chances of future, painful flare ups. Examples include, muscle strengthening and cardiovascular exercises, as well as activities designed to improve stiffness and range-of-motion.

Fibromyalgia Explained

While the exact causes of fibromyalgia remain undetermined, some medical experts believe it may be caused by an overly active sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system directs the body’s immediate and involuntary response to dangerous or stressful situations, often referred to as the “fight or flight” response.

Although it has never been scientifically proven, anecdotal evidence suggests that people typically develop symptoms of fibromyalgia after experiencing a physically or emotionally traumatic event.

Fibromyalgia is a condition used to describe someone who is experiencing a particular combination of symptoms. Everyone’s experience of fibromyalgia is different – some people initially suffer from chronic bouts of stress or depression, with other symptoms building over time.

Women tend to be more affected by fibromyalgia than men. You are also at higher risk if you have a family member who also suffers from fibromyalgia.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia include, but are not limited to:

  • Persistant fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Fluctuations in mood
  • Forgetfulness or disorientation
  • Disruption to or irregular sleep cycle
  • Sensitivity to touch/numbness
  • Chronic and/or sharp muscle pains
  • Tender areas of the body
