Physical therapy aids sports injuries

Our Progressive Medical Fitness physical therapy team are movement experts who can help you achieve your physical goals. To get you back in the game as quickly as possible, your physical therapist will design an individualized treatment plan, based on your specific needs.

Initially, your physical therapist may review your diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound. We will conduct a thorough diagnostic exam to assess your specific condition. Your treatment plan will consider the nature of your injury, your fitness level, and your lifestyle. Your plan will likely include manual therapy to reduce scar tissue and increase your range of motion, stretches to improve balance and mobility, and exercises to strengthen the muscles of, and surrounding, the injured area. Your treatment plan will not only help you recover after your sports injury but also be preventative of future injuries.

Causes of sports injury

Treating the injury as soon as possible is a key aspect of sports injury rehabilitation.

The term “sports injury” encompasses a wide range of conditions, including any type of injury that occurs while participating in athletic activity.

Sports injuries can be the result of many activities, such as: running in ill-fitted shoes, twisting your ankle on the soccer field, lifting heavy weights at the gym or even a bat swing gone awry.

Your treatment plan will be targeted to considerations such as the severity of the injury, your health history, and whether or not surgical intervention is required. Your individual recovery period will also vary due to the same considerations.

If you have sustained a sports injury

There are a number of different injuries that can occur while participating in an athletic activity.

Some of the most common forms of sports injury include, but are not limited to:

Knee injuries

Your knee is one of the most commonly injured body parts due to the complexity of this crucial joint. An injury to the knee have a range of symptoms that may include: a dull ache originating in your hip and radiating down to your knee, repetitive use injuries that cause a decrease in knee mobility, or more severe injuries such as an ACL tear.

Shin splints

Medial tibial stress syndrome is the medical term used to describe shin splints – referring to a pain that is felt in the shin (front of lower leg) bones. Stress placed on the shinbone and the surrounding connective tissues is often the cause of this type of pain. Shin splints can be painful and are often debilitating; however, they are preventable by wearing appropriate footwear, warming up and stretching before exercise, and strengthening your core and leg muscles.

Sprain

The ligaments are tough bands of fibrous tissue that connect your bones together at various joints. When a ligament is over stretched or tears, the resulting injury is called a sprain. Once a sprain occurs and a ligament is overstretched, there is a greater likelihood of recurrence.

Strain or “pulled muscle”

Tendons are a tissue that connect a particular muscle to its associated bone. A strain, commonly referred to as a “pulled muscle,” occurs when a tendon is stretched beyond its limits. Once a tendon is overstretched, there is a greater likelihood of recurrence.
