What is a Physical Therapy?
Both a medical and hands-on approach, physical therapy relieves pain and restores function. Physical therapists are medical experts trained in musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Physical therapists work together as a team with physicians. Our physical therapy team will assess your movement patterns, identify the source of your pain, and develop a plan to alleviate it.
What do I need to bring?
Bring your prescription and your insurance cards as well as a photo ID. Bring relevant MRI/Xray reports (please do not bring the physical discs) to be reviewed by the physical therapists. Physical therapists are able to read and review the findings, but cannot provide an impression/diagnosis. A radiologist must do that. Be prepared to provide your previous medical or surgical history.
How many visits will I need?
It is difficult to give a specific answer regarding how many visits will be needed. It is on a case by case basis depending on the diagnosis and functional deficits. It is determined following a thorough assessment by the physical therapist.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Clothing should be comfortable and allow the therapist to be able to easily access the area that is being treated. We recommend you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing that is appropriate to engage in therapeutic exercises and movement. Baggy clothing and supportive sneakers are also recommended (Athletic attire).

Do I have to be referred by a doctor?
Not initially. Under Direct Access in NYS, patients may be seen by a physical therapist for 30 days OR for 10 sessions (whichever comes first) prior to needing to see a doctor to receive a prescription to continue physical therapy.
Treatment duration depends on your diagnosis, the severity of your impairments, your past medical history, and other factors. Re-evaluations will be done to assess your progress and your therapist communicates with your physician to help you achieve your therapy goals.

Physical therapy is not meant to hurt, but to relieve pain and help regain normal functionality. However, as we work towards your goals, you may experience some discomfort. Discomfort is normal and part of the recovery process. You may experience some temporary soreness from using weakened and recovering muscles. This is the body’s normal response to physical therapy treatments. Soreness is different from pain; pain is something we want to avoid during our treatment sessions. It is important to be open with your therapist about how you are feeling after treatments so that we can ensure that what you feel is appropriate. This is so that we can recommend ways to modify treatment sessions as needed. We want to return you back to your normal activities - pain-free, comfortably and as quickly as possible.
Anyone and everyone can benefit from physical therapy, even those without a current injury/condition! Preventative and rehabilitative care prove to be effective options for all ages. Patients who come open minded, work hard, and perform their home exercise programs see the biggest improvements and overall best outcomes.
That is a difficult question to answer as it is very specific to not only the condition being treated, but the individual as well. Some patients feel relief after their first treatment, some feel relief following a few treatments. 2 patients with the same condition may come to PT and progress at different rates so it is imperative to not compare yourself to others. As you are being treated, be open with your physical therapist so that your treatment plan can be adjusted according to how you are progressing through the healing process. When it comes to physical therapy, you get out what you put in, so come in ready to work and we will do everything in our power to get you feeling good!
